On July 19, 1985, respondent Herbert Irving Wright was stopped by police officers while driving in Las Vegas. The officers' attention was drawn to Wright's vehicle because it was a 1972 black over white Mercury Montego. An elderly couple had been robbed nearby the night before, at about the same time, and the suspects had escaped in a vehicle reported to be a 1974 black over white Ford Torino.
