The question in this appeal is whether the circuit court erred in dismissing a petition for adoption of an infant child on the grounds of lack of jurisdiction.

Adoptions were unknown at common law and exist today solely because of statute. The first Maryland statute addressing this subject is found in the Acts of 1892, ch. 244, later codified in Article 16, §§ 62A to 62F, and today found in Md.Code (1984, 1987 Cum.Supp.)...
