In August 1985, Local P-9 of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union (UFCW) went out on strike at the Austin, Minnesota, plant of George A. Hormel and Company. Soon afterwards, in an apparent attempt to put further pressure on Hormel, members of the Austin union picketed Hormel's Ottumwa, Iowa, plant.
