Defendant, Ron Berryman, was indicted for murder under section 9-1(a)(1) of the Criminal Code of 1961 (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1985, ch. 38, par. 9-1(a)(1)). The specific charge against him was that on May 25, 1986, defendant, "without lawful justification and with intent to kill" stabbed Richard Baker with a long, pointed, metal object, thereby causing Baker's death.
