In August 1986, the Hamilton County Grand Jury returned a joint, multi-count indictment charging Carol Jean Porter and defendant-appellant Jeffrey Woods with aggravated murder, aggravated robbery and conspiracy to commit aggravated murder and/or aggravated robbery in connection with the fatal shooting of Porter's uncle, Jessie Gandy. The charges against defendant were tried to a jury.1
