Blaine Austin, the husband of plaintiff-appellant Margaret Austin, died on October 13, 1977, from asbestos-induced cancer of the lung lining. The plaintiff brought suit in the United States District Court for the District of Maine against sixteen suppliers of asbestos products to Bath Iron Works, a shipbuilder, where her husband had worked from 1952 through 1976.
