Section 101(a)(2) of the Labor Management Reporting and Disclosure Act (LMRDA), 29 U.S.C. § 411(a)(2), protects union members' rights to free speech and assembly while preserving the rights of unions to adopt and enforce reasonable rules governing the responsibilities of members towards their unions as institutions. Specifically, section 101(a)(2) provides:
