FERREN, Associate Judge:

According to the government's evidence at trial, appellant slashed the throat of his girlfriend from ear to ear. Although she survived the initial assault, she died suddenly six weeks later from hepatitis apparently contracted as a result of the treatment of her wounds. A jury convicted appellant of first degree premeditated murder while armed, D.C.Code §§ 22-2401, -3202 (1981), and the court sentenced him to twenty years to life...
