On or about February 22, 1985, Debra Davis and John Vandiver were murdered in Montgomery County, Texas. Friends and family of Debra Davis created a trust fund on March 15, 1985, to assist in the investigation of the murders. The trust agreement authorized the trustees to raise funds to be used to pay a reward for information.
