This is a products liability action. On November 23, 1983, the original plaintiff, Mrs. Audrey C. Pitre, purchased a "Woodwind Collection" basting spoon from a Sears Roebuck store in Houma, Louisiana. On January 5, 1984, she was using the spoon to make a roux when without warning the nylon bowl portion of the spoon exploded causing the roux to splatter about her face and body seriously burning her.
