On December 17, 1985, Maria Reyes and Griselle Santiago, New York residents, arrived together at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport on a flight which originated in Colombia. When they were found to have a total of 143 sausage-shaped balloons filled with cocaine secreted in their alimentary canals, they were arrested and charged with importing and possessing the drugs.
