The State's evidence, in pertinent part, showed the following:

The victim suffered from migraine headaches so severe that "sometimes [she] would pass out, or most of the time [she] would be extremely ... nauseated." On the morning of 13 July 1983 the victim went to the emergency room at St. Joseph's Hospital, a private hospital in Asheville, complaining of a migraine headache.
