DUPONT, C. J.
The defendant appeals from the judgment of conviction, after a jury trial, of manslaughter in the second degree in violation of General Statutes § 53a-56a and carrying a pistol without a permit in violation of General Statutes § 29-35. The dispositive claim on appeal is whether the trial court erred by refusing to answer questions of law directed to it, by the jury, in contravention of Practice Book § 864.
