JUSTICE MURRAY delivered the opinion of the court:

In 1977, after a jury trial, defendant Charles Day and a codefendant were convicted of attempted armed robbery and murder. Day was sentenced on the murder conviction to a term of 40 to 65 years, and his codefendant received a term of 50 to 75 years. Both defendants appealed their convictions to this court, and we affirmed the trial court's judgment (People v. Day (1979),
