In late 1980, after a series of inmate disturbances at the United States Penitentiary at Marion, Illinois (Marion), the Marion Prisoners' Rights Project (MPRP or Project) and four members of its staff — three attorneys and one paralegal — were banned from access to the prison and their inmate-clients.
