On the morning of July 11, 1977, in the City of Chicago, the apartment in which seventeen-year-old Veronica Lee lived, was burglarized. Lee, apparently unbeknownst to the burglar, was in the apartment; when discovered, she was stabbed to death. Petitioner, Lonnie Yates, an American Negro, was indicted for the murder and burglary.
