Paradiso was indicted for the rape and murder, on August 12, 1979, of Marie B. Iannuzzi (the victim). On July 21, 1984, Paradiso was found guilty of second-degree murder and of assault with intent to rape. From his life sentence on the murder conviction and from his consecutive sentence of eighteen to twenty years on the other conviction, Paradiso appealed.
