Richard Spears and his mother, Bessie Barton, filed separate lawsuits1 against McCormick and Company, Inc., the owner and publisher of the Alexandria Daily Town Talk newspaper (the paper) along with certain of its employees, Kathy Des Jardins and James R. Butler, Jr. The suit was based upon the final segment of a four-part series run by the paper entitled "Manhandled" which described the plight of women who are battered...
