On September 19, 1982, Jorge Silva-Wiscovich, a dentist, injured his right hand when the dental chair he had bought from defendants collapsed while he was inspecting and handling the mechanism for raising and lowering the chair. On September 19, 1983, Silva-Wiscovich and his wife filed an action against defendants in the United States District Court for the District of Puerto Rico.
