On June 1, 1984, a Middlesex County grand jury returned two indictments charging the defendant, Rene Comtois, with rape and abuse of a child under the age of sixteen. G.L.c. 265, § 23 (1984 ed.). The indictments charged the defendant with rape and abuse of his daughter on divers dates between September 21, 1982, and October 4, 1983; and of his stepdaughter on divers dates between October 1, 1982, and February 27, 1983.1
