LIACOS, J.

In November, 1984, a Suffolk County grand jury indicted the defendant, James W. McDonough, for forcible, unnatural sexual intercourse with a child under the age of sixteen.1 The acts were alleged to have occurred between August 22, 1979, and May 14, 1982. After trial in the Superior Court in Suffolk County, the jury returned a verdict of guilty of statutory rape. G.L.c. 265, § 23 (1986 ed.).2
