Defendant was charged in the circuit court of Sangamon County with the offense of attempt (murder) in violation of sections 8-4 and 9-1(a)(1) of the Criminal Code of 1961 (Code) (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1983, ch. 38, pars. 8-4, 9-1(a)(1)). A jury was impaneled and the trial commenced.
