For many Rhode Islanders, the summer season is a great time for family reunions. Thus it was that on July 2, 1978, the plaintiff, Albertha Brodeur (Albertha); her son, Larry; his wife, Meredith; and their children left Albertha's Slatersville home for a "family picnic."
