ROBERT MADDEN HILL, Circuit Judge:

Terry Pinegar was driving a newspaper truck on a dark, moonless night on an unlighted two-lane highway in the rural Mississippi delta. A vehicle from the opposite direction approached, and both vehicles dimmed their lights. Just before they passed, Pinegar noticed a dark, motionless object immediately ahead in his lane. As he passed over it, Pinegar realized to his horror...
