The plaintiff, Johnny M. Hughes ("Hughes"), was allegedly injured on December 1, 1983 while working on a fixed platform located in the Gulf of Mexico, some twenty-one miles from shore. The plaintiff and his wife filed suit, claiming injuries caused by the defendants' alleged negligence and by an allegedly defective diesel engine.
