BILLINGS, Justice.

At trial, the State's case depended primarily on the testimony of Thomas Jefferson "Luke" Bowens. Bowens testified that on the night of 26 July 1983, he and the two co-defendants had been at an arcade in a shopping center in Spring Lake, North Carolina. As they left the arcade, defendant Harrison said that he had a pair of bolt cutters in the blue football bag that he was carrying and Bowens stated that he needed money.
