On July 9, 1984, the defendant's wife, Della Barger, reported to the Muscatine police department that defendant was carrying a stolen twelve-gauge shotgun behind the driver's seat of his pickup truck. The Muscatine police department notified the police department in West Liberty of this information and defendant's address.
