On November 20, 1984, a man later identified as the defendant entered a service station in Davenport, Iowa, and requested a pack of cigarettes from the attendant, Jeffrey Booth. The man then produced a gun and robbed the station attendant of approximately $187. The robber then disassembled the telephone and used the cord to tie Booth's hands behind his back.
