Gary Donald Reed, the appellant, was convicted by a jury in the Circuit Court for Queen Anne's County of the second degree murder of James Bardy Middleton, use of a handgun in the commission of a crime of violence, and transporting a handgun. He was sentenced to consecutive terms of twenty-five years (with ten years suspended) for second degree murder and ten years (with five years suspended) for use of a handgun.
