Mrintunjoy Sengupta, an East Indian whose skin pigment is black, was employed as a senior engineer by the Morrison-Knudsen Co. (M-K). In early 1982, M-K experienced economic difficulties that necessitated significant reductions in its work force. Sengupta was discharged.
