STATE v. HAYWOOD

No. 82-KA-0241.

491 So.2d 1318 (1986)

STATE of Louisiana v. Darren HAYWOOD and Ernest McGee.

Supreme Court of Louisiana.

June 23, 1986.

Attorney(s) appearing for the Case

William J. Guste, Jr., Atty. Gen., Barbara Rutledge, Asst. Atty. Gen, Harry F. Connick, Dist. Atty, Jack Peebles, Michael McMahon, Susan Scott Hunt, Asst. Dist. Attys, for plaintiff-appellee.

Clyde Merritt, Dwight Doskey, Orleans Indigent Defender Program, Lawrence Blake Jones, Scheuermann & Jones, New Orleans, for defendant-appellant.

LEMMON, Justice.

This is an appeal by Darren Haywood and Ernest McGee from convictions of first degree murder and second degree murder respectively and sentences to life imprisonment. The principal issue is whether the conviction should be reversed because the trial judge prevented Haywood's attorney from cross-examining the prosecution's chief witness on the basis of prior statements made by the witness to the attorney in a mid-trial interview in jail.
