On April 6, 1983, a Suffolk County grand jury indicted the defendant, John J. Salemme, for murder. G.L.c. 265, § 1 (1984 ed.). On Februrary 13, 1984, a jury returned a verdict of guilty of murder in the first degree on the indictment. The judge sentenced Salemme to life imprisonment at the Massachusetts Correctional Institution at Cedar Junction. Salemme appealed to this court.
