The defendant, Calvin Butler, was charged by separate informations in the circuit court of Lake County with the offenses of theft of property valued at over $300 (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1983, ch. 38, par. 16-1(a)(1)) and residential burglary (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1983, ch. 38, par. 19-3).
