According to the People's evidence, the Manhattan South Narcotics Area office of the Police Department received an anonymous telephone tip on the morning of March 28, 1983. The caller stated that cocaine dealers from Miami, Florida, were staying at the George Washington Hotel in Manhattan and specifically mentioned rooms 1044, 947 and 1444.
