Appellant, Joseph Edward Roberts (defendant), was convicted of the crime of assault with a deadly weapon on February 28, 1980 following trial by jury. Defendant, who had been released on bond, failed to appear at a hearing to decide whether he should be remanded into custody. He also failed to appear on the date originally set for sentencing.
