On November 28, 1983, the defendant, Robert E. Monteiro, was convicted by a jury of murder in the first degree, armed robbery, and the unlawful carrying of a firearm. The trial judge sentenced the defendant to life imprisonment on the murder conviction and to concurrent terms of eighteen to twenty-five years on the armed robbery conviction and three to five years on the conviction for unlawfully carrying a firearm...
