RABINOWITZ, Justice.

The principal issue presented in this appeal is the extent of a police officer's duty to respond to a life-threatening situation. Appellee Douglas McLean claims that the City of Kotzebue (the city) was negligent in preventing a stabbing of McLean because a Kotzebue police officer failed to promptly respond to a life-threatening phone call made by McLean's assailant prior to the attack.
