Nature of the Case

On March 30, 1982, the appellee, Loren J. Richards, suffered a crushing injury to the four fingers of his left hand while he was engaged in work for his employer, the Union Pacific Railroad Company. The four fingers were amputated, and subsequent operations became necessary in order to develop stubs so that the plaintiff might obtain some kind of limited finger utilization.
