Wallace, an inmate at the Kansas Correctional Institute for Women, filed an action under 42 U.S.C. § 1983 (1982) asserting various civil rights claims against defendants. Wallace's attorney was allowed to withdraw from the case on June 8, 1983. On June 16, defendants filed a motion for summary judgment, which was granted by the district court on September 30.
