RABINOWITZ, Justice.

In January, 1973, Grady L. Hamrick drowned near Seldovia, Alaska while trying to rescue the first mate of the vessel Shishaldin, a boat owned by Shishaldin Fisheries, Inc. (Shishaldin). Grady's widow, Judith Hamrick, brought a wrongful death action against Shishaldin Fisheries, Inc., which carried both primary and excess insurance coverage.
