The defendant, Kenneth Hanson, was convicted of the offense of unlawful possession of a firearm (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1981, ch. 38, par. 24-3.1(a)(3)) and sentenced to a term of seven months' imprisonment. The defendant's conviction was affirmed on appeal by the Fifth District Appellate Court. (People v.
