We hold that, as a matter of statutory interpretation,1 reports of Probate Court probation officers made to a probate judge, pursuant to G.L.c. 276, § 85B, inserted by St. 1969, c. 771, § 3, must be in writing, and litigants must be afforded the opportunity to cross-examine the probation officer on the written report.
