Petitioner, John L. Williams, was convicted of second degree burglary and first degree theft. The charges were based, in part, on evidence found in the course of a search of petitioner's vehicle following his detention by police for questioning. The trial judge denied petitioner's motion to suppress the evidence, and the Court of Appeals, Division One, affirmed (State v. Williams, 34 Wn.App. 662,
