This consolidated appeal arose out of a shooting incident which occurred on May 26, 1978. Ten days earlier, plaintiff Riste had separated from his wife, Terri. Terri, along with her four children, then moved into the house owned by her mother, defendant Helton. On the date in question, plaintiff Riste came to see his wife and children at the Helton home.
