En route from Athens, Georgia, to Clemson, South Carolina, on February 21, 1981, appellants, Clemson University students, stopped at an Exxon service station in Franklin County, Georgia. Appellant Pitts, the driver of the car, pulled up to a self-service island and exited the car in order to pay for the fuel he intended to purchase.
