Edna Marie Leach entered Akron General Medical Center on July 27, 1980, suffering from respiratory distress. Mrs. Leach subsequently suffered a respiratory-cardiac arrest, and though her heartbeat was restored, Mrs. Leach remained in a chronic vegetative state.
