On January 13, 1982, Jeffrey Atcheson and three others, one of whom was appellee-plaintiff, decided to take advantage of a light snowfall for recreational purposes. They drove to a nearby parking lot in a pickup truck owned by Atcheson. The four individuals attached an inverted abandoned automobile hood to a forty-foot rope and tied the other end of the rope to the rear bumper of the pickup truck.
