Tafford Holman, the defendant in this capital case, was indicted for the intentional murder of Anthony Townsend (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1979, ch. 38, par. 9-1(a)(1)), armed violence based on the aggravated kidnaping of Antoinette Townsend, Anthony's mother (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1979, ch. 38, pars. 10-1(a)(1), (2), 10-2(a)(3), 33A-2),
