These actions began in 1971 as separate lawsuits brought by inmates under 42 U.S.C.A. § 1983 and 28 U.S.C.A. § 1343(3) to redress a host of constitutional violations in the Alabama prison system. After extensive hearings, the district court ordered sweeping relief over ten years ago.
