On May 12, 1982, appellant was charged with assault with intent to kill while armed (D.C.Code §§ 22-501, -3202 (1981)), mayhem and malicious disfigurement while armed (D.C.Code §§ 22-506, -3202 (1981)), and possession of a prohibited weapon (D.C.Code § 22-3214(b) (1981)). The government dismissed the mayhem count on August 6, 1982. Appellant's jury trial began that same day. On August 9, 1982, the jury returned a verdict...
